Best Mosquito Repellents: What Works in a Mesa Backyard

The best mosquito repellents are the ones that carry an EPA registration: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (or its synthetic form, PMD), IR3535 and 2-undecanone. Used on skin as the label directs, they give hours of protection, while candles, wristbands and ultrasonic gadgets do very little. If mosquitoes are still swarming your Mesa yard after you dump the water, call us at (480) 422-8388 or see our mosquito control in Mesa page.

Which Mosquito Repellents Actually Work?

Only the active ingredients that the EPA has evaluated for skin use have solid evidence behind them. The CDC points people to the same short list, and it is the list we tell Mesa homeowners to follow when they ask us what to buy at the store. The product name and the scent matter far less than the ingredient on the back of the bottle.

Active ingredientTypeHow it performsGood to know
DEETSyntheticLongest tested protection, rises with concentrationCan damage some plastics and synthetic fabrics
PicaridinSyntheticComparable to DEET at similar strengthNearly odorless and does not feel greasy
Oil of lemon eucalyptus / PMDPlant-basedGood protection, shorter than DEETThe EPA-registered form is not the same as plain lemon eucalyptus essential oil, and the label says not for children under three
IR3535SyntheticModerateGentle on skin, reapply more often
2-undecanonePlant-derivedModerateFound in some newer natural-style products

Is DEET safe to use on my family?

When used as directed, EPA-registered repellents are considered safe for adults and for children above the age on the label. Spray your hands and rub it on a child's face rather than spraying near the eyes and mouth, never put it under clothing or on cuts, and wash it off when you come inside. If you have questions about a baby or a pregnancy, ask your doctor.

Do natural repellents work as well?

Some do and many do not. Registered plant-based ingredients such as PMD hold up in testing, but a bottle of "essential oil blend" that has no EPA registration has not been tested the same way. Look for the EPA registration number on the label.

Which Mosquito Products Do Not Work?

Several popular products have little or no evidence behind them, and Mesa homeowners often buy them first because they sit by the register at the store. Skip these or treat them as a small extra:

  • Ultrasonic repellers and phone apps: studies have found they do not reduce bites.
  • Wristbands and clip-on devices: they protect only a tiny area around the band.
  • Vitamin B and garlic supplements: there is no reliable evidence that eating them keeps mosquitoes away.
  • Bug zappers: they kill mostly harmless insects, not the mosquitoes biting you.
  • Citronella candles: they add a small amount of smoke and scent, but they do not make a patio mosquito-free.

The same goes for backyard plants. We covered that in our post on plants that prevent mosquitoes, and the short version is that herbs help a little, not a lot.

How Long Does Each Repellent Last in Mesa Heat?

Less than the label suggests on a hot day. Sweat, swimming and a 105-degree afternoon all wear repellent off the skin faster, so reapply based on the label and use the heavier end of the protection range when you are outside for hours. In the cooler evenings of October through April, a single application tends to carry you much further.

What is the best way to apply it?

Put sunscreen on first, then repellent on top. Cover all exposed skin, including ankles and the backs of the neck and ears, which are the spots mosquitoes find first. Use only enough to cover the skin, and do not spray indoors in a closed room.

Can I treat my clothes too?

Yes. Permethrin is registered for treating clothing, shoes and camping gear, but never for use on skin. Treat items outdoors, let them dry fully, and follow the label.

Why Do Mosquitoes Bother Mesa Yards So Much?

Because Mesa is full of irrigated ground in a desert. Flood-irrigated lawns, canal laterals, neighborhood retention basins, and the green spaces around Riverview Park and Red Mountain keep water on the surface long after a monsoon storm has passed. Mosquitoes need only a bottle cap of water to breed, so a leaking drip valve in 85203 can feed a yard the same way a pond does.

Two groups cause most of the trouble. Culex mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and bite at dusk, while Aedes mosquitoes breed in small containers and bite in the daytime. Both can be active in Mesa from spring through the fall monsoon months, with the heaviest pressure from July through October. We talk more about that rhythm in our guide to stopping mosquitoes in the 85208 area of Mesa.

What Should You Do Around the House Besides Using Repellent?

Remove the water they breed in, because repellent protects only you while the mosquitoes keep multiplying a few feet away. A mosquito can go from egg to biting adult in about a week in Valley heat, so a once-a-week walk around the yard is the habit that makes the biggest difference. Check these spots first:

  1. Plant saucers, buckets, toys and anything else that holds water.
  2. Bird baths and pet bowls, which need scrubbing and refilling every few days.
  3. Drip irrigation valve boxes and low spots where water sits after watering.
  4. Gutters, rain barrels and the lids of covered containers after a storm.
  5. Swimming pools, fountains and spas that are no longer circulating.

Then add a layer of comfort. A fan on the patio does more than most people expect, because mosquitoes are weak fliers and have trouble reaching you in moving air. Sit away from dense shrubs and ivy, where mosquitoes rest in the shade during the day.

What should I do after I get bitten?

Wash the bite with soap and water and avoid scratching, since broken skin invites infection. A cold compress or an over-the-counter anti-itch product usually settles the itch. Mosquitoes in Arizona can carry West Nile virus, so let a doctor know if a fever, a severe headache or body aches follow a stretch of bites.

Does repellent matter in the cooler months?

Less, but it still counts. Mild Mesa evenings from October into November keep people outside and keep mosquitoes biting until the first real cold snap. Keep a bottle by the back door so it is there when you need it, and keep dumping standing water until the weather turns.

Repellent or Yard Treatment: Which Do You Need?

Repellent protects the person, and a yard treatment reduces the mosquitoes in the area. Most Mesa families end up using both during the worst months.

SituationBest approach
A hike, a ball game or a quick trip outsideEPA-registered repellent on skin
Occasional bites on the patioDump water weekly, run a fan, wear repellent at dusk
Bitten the moment you step outsideLook for hidden water, then call a professional
Daytime biting under shade treesA professional treatment of the resting areas
A neighbor's pool or a nearby basin is the sourceRepellent plus a professional yard treatment

A professional visit finds the breeding spots you cannot see, such as a covered valve box or a clogged drain, and treats the places where adult mosquitoes rest. If you are in Mesa, we cover neighborhoods across 85201 through 85215 and the surrounding East Valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mosquito repellent for kids?

Choose an EPA-registered product whose label allows use on children, such as picaridin or DEET at a moderate strength. Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus on children under three, apply it to your own hands first, and keep it away from the eyes and mouth.

What is the best mosquito repellent for a patio or yard?

Repellent on skin works best for people, and a fan plus weekly water removal works best for the space. Spatial products like candles and coils give only a small area of relief, so do not rely on them for a whole yard.

How often should I reapply mosquito repellent in Arizona heat?

Follow the label, and reapply sooner if you are sweating heavily or have been in the pool. Heat and sweat shorten the protection time, especially in the summer months.

Do mosquito repellents work on Aedes mosquitoes that bite in the daytime?

Yes. EPA-registered repellents work on both Culex and Aedes mosquitoes, so use them whenever you are outside, not just at dusk.

Why do mosquitoes seem to bite me more than other people?

Mosquitoes follow carbon dioxide, body heat and skin chemistry, and those differ from person to person. That is why one person on the patio gets bitten while another is left alone, and why repellent matters even if you feel you are not a target.
